Linear Tape Open, or LTO as it’s more commonly known, was developed as open source in the late 1990s by the LTO consortium, led by HP, IBM, and Seagate. Seagate made improvements, particularly on the drive hardware side. Drive development is currently being handled by Quantum.
LTO technology was designed in 2000 as LTO-1, capable of reading and writing to 100GB data cartridges. Now, LTO-5 has taken its place in the market and can back up 1.5 GB of uncompressed and 3 TB of compressed data.
