With Ramadan upon us, screens are filled with ads from food companies. The ones that caught my attention the most were the Pepsi and Coca-Cola ads.
First, watch the Coca-Cola commercial.
Now for the Pepsi ad.
The Coca-Cola ad doesn’t feature any celebrities, but it’s accompanied by Candan Erçetin’s incredible voice. I’m not actually trying to find the differences between the ads here. I just want to point out this: In the Pepsi ad, a large family is picnicking in a forest. Hülya Avşar picks up Pepsi bottles that have been placed in running water to cool, explains the campaign, and then places them on the table. Notice the bright, sunny weather. Just as an old lady says, “Your campaign is a bombshell,” a voice calls out. It seems a cannon has been fired. Happy iftar, says Hülya Avşar. But the sun is still shining.
Isn’t iftar time the same as sunset? Or are these friends fasting in one of those northern countries where the sun never sets?
