The service ticket opened for the HP server that crashed during a RAM upgrade continues: HP technician Osman Bey arrived with two motherboards. The first one failed, but thanks to the second one, the server finally booted up. Important lessons learned from this process and new information gained about RAID 6 and ILO.
🛠️ THE END OF THE HP SERVER CRISIS: VICTORY AND NEW INFORMATION COMING WITH A SECOND MOTHERBOARD
The service ticket we opened for our HP DL380 G5 server, which screamed like a Boeing 777 and flashed red lights while installing RAM, bore fruit the next day. Osman from HP arrived at the operation site with a spare Power Supply and a brand new Main Board.
🚨 A TWICE-MISSING SYSTEM AND THE FIRST MAINBOARD DISAPPOINTMENT
Osman’s quick tests confirmed the mainboard failure, which I had also suspected. We immediately installed the new mainboard and tried to power up the system. Oops! Again, the same sound, the same movement: The server fans were running at full speed, the Boeing was climbing onto the runway but couldn’t take off. In short, the newly installed mainboard didn’t work either. Osman explained that the situation was rare, said he would order another one, and quietly left.
🚀 THE SECOND TEST AND THE VICTORIOUS FLIGHT
But the story didn’t end there. Osman arrived the next day (today!) with a new board, a surprise. Luckily, they had another one ready to go. We got to work right away; We removed the first, faulty, new card, installed the second, and tried again.
Bismillah! It happened this time! Our Boeing took off, loudly this time, but just as it should! The system booted without errors, the RAID 5 array was intact, and Active Directory and File Server were up and running without any problems. We felt a huge sense of relief.
💡 Osman’s Leftover Information: ILO and RAID 6
After work was done, Osman and I chatted a bit about technology. During our lunch break, he shared some important information about ILO (Integrated Lights-Out) management, which is particularly vital for HP servers, and RAID 6 configurations, which are the next level of data security. This minor crisis not only fixed the hardware but also enriched our knowledge.
The moral of this story is clear: Never give up in IT operations, always have good service support with you and Never disrupt your backups
