Phil Katz and A compression format ZIP

Zip is a file format used for file compression and archiving. A zip file can contain one or more compressed files. The Zip file format has various algorithms for compressing multiple file formats.
The Zip format was created in 1989 by a computer programmer named Phil Katz under the names PKWARE and PKZIP, replacing the ARC compression format.

The Zip format is currently supported by many utilities. Microsoft supports the zip format under the name Compressed Folders, while Apple can open this format with Mac OS X under the name Archive Utility.

The name Zip was suggested by Phil Katz’s friend Robert Mahoney because it means “Speed.”

Phil Katz was born on November 3, 1962, and died on April 14, 2000. Katz struggled with alcohol for years. His first known DUI arrest occurred in 1991, and he was subsequently arrested for DUI. His license was suspended in 1994 and 1999. On April 14, 2000, at the age of 37, Katz was found dead in a hotel room with an empty mint julep bottle in his hand. The coroner’s report stated that his death was caused by acute pancreatic hemorrhage caused by chronic alcoholism.
