If an engine is not running there are two reasons
“There are two reasons why an engine doesn’t start,” said our character Benny in the movie Benny & Joon. Benny is a single man who owns an auto repair shop, lost his family in a car accident, and is struggling to survive with his mentally ill sister.
When his sister and Sam (Johnny Depp) invite Ruthie, who works at a cafe, to their house, Benny experiences his first encounter with an intersex person. Ruthie stays over for dinner, and after dinner, Benny says the following about his car not starting: Remember, Ruthie starts the car, and although it “thrums,” it won’t start…
“When a car won’t start, there are two reasons. One, it has an ignition problem, and two, it’s out of fuel.”
Benny & Joon

Watching this 1993 film, I immediately thought of our new cars. What about these new-fangled cars of ours? Our cars that don’t start on their own, that have no problems (according to Benny, they start the car and the tank is full of fuel), suddenly won’t start, their electronic devices stubbornly refuse to start the engine…

My brother-in-law recently got into his car, which had been sitting in the garage for a long time, to start it. How could he have known at that moment that the wires gnawed by mice would cost 800 TL to fix in order for the car to start!
I’m going to correct that line today; “If an engine isn’t starting, there could be a number of reasons. It might not be firing, you’re out of fuel, your electronics aren’t working, or MICE might be chewing through your wiring.”
